English proficiency requirements

The University of Missouri expects international students to know English well enough to:

  • Comprehend academic lectures.
  • Participate in discussions.
  • Read textbooks and other academic materials.
  • Write effectively.

To meet Mizzou’s English language requirements for admissions purposes, international students must submit a qualifying English language exam score.

ELSP placement exam

All international undergraduate students are also required to take the College Board ACCUPLACER ESL and WritePlacer ESL tests prior to arriving on campus. Instructions for taking these online tests will be sent directly to students who are required to take them.

Course placement

Based on the results of the placement exam, students may be required to enroll in one or more English Language Support Program courses in their first semester at Mizzou. In order to ensure that students carry a manageable course load, students who place into one ELSP course are advised to take three additional courses. Students who place into two ELSP courses are advised to enroll in two additional courses. Students who perform well on the exam are cleared to take a full-time load of academic courses.
