When I landed in Florence, I expected beautiful architecture, amazing food and unforgettable memories. What I did not expect was how deeply this experience would change my perspective on health care, culture and even myself. Studying nursing ethics in Florence gave me the opportunity to learn in a way that no class in the United States ever could. Every street, church, museum, hospital and conversation became part of the learning experience.

Florence is a city filled with history, art and human connection, all things that relate closely to nursing and ethical care. One of the things that stood out to me most was the pace of life in Italy. People truly value family, relationships and being present in the moment. Meals are not rushed, conversations are meaningful and community is deeply important. As someone preparing for a career in nursing, this reminded me that health care is not only about treating illness. It is about caring for people as whole human beings. Watching the way Italians prioritize connection helped me realize how important empathy and compassion are in patient care.

Being surrounded by the history of Florence also made our discussions about nursing ethics feel more meaningful. Florence, known as the birthplace of the Renaissance, has a long history centered around human dignity, education and compassion. Walking through the city made me think about how health care has evolved and how ethical decisions continue to shape people’s lives today. Learning about ethics while standing in a city built on humanistic values gave the subject a completely different level of importance.

Of course, this program was not just about academics. Some of my favorite memories came from the simple moments, watching the sunset over the Arno River, trying authentic pasta and gelato, exploring hidden streets, and laughing with friends while navigating a new country together. These experiences pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me become more independent and confident.

One lesson I will carry with me forever is the importance of cultural understanding in health care. Every patient comes from a different background with unique beliefs, traditions and values. This program reminded me that being a good nurse means being open-minded and willing to understand perspectives different from my own. Studying abroad in Florence was more than just a trip. It was an experience that challenged me, inspired me and helped me grow both personally and professionally. I know the lessons I learned here will stay with me throughout my nursing career and beyond. If there is one thing Florence taught me, it is this: healing begins with compassion, understanding and the willingness to care for people beyond their diagnosis.
