On July 17, a new rule regarding duration of status for F, J and I nonimmigrants was published in the Federal Register. This rule will impact the ability to change major or degree level, transfer or request additional time in the U.S. on F-1 and J-1 status. It will go into effect Sept. 15, 2026.

Published changes
- Changes the admit until date (AUD) from duration of status (D/S) to a fixed admission period.
- On Sept. 15, 2026, students and scholars previously admitted for D/S will have your AUD adjusted to the program end date listed on your I-20/DS-2019 or up to four years from the rule effective date plus grace period (Nov. 14, 2030, for F-1 students or Oct. 15, 2030, for J-1 students/scholars), whichever is sooner. Your I-94 record will continue to show D/S even though your AUD will change.
- If you enter or re-enter the U.S. on or after Sept. 15, 2026, you will receive a specific AUD on your I-94 record. This is likely to be your I-20/DS-2019 program end date or up to four years from your program start date, whichever is sooner.
- If you need additional time beyond your AUD, you will need to apply to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for an extension of stay. You may require an updated I-20/DS-2019 from ISSS.
- Reduces the F-1 grace period from 60 days to 30 days.
- F-1 students who do not travel and re-enter the U.S. on or after Sept. 15, 2026, will keep their 60-day grace period upon completion of their degree program or approved work authorization.
- There are no grace period changes for J-1 students/scholars.
- Limits on transfers for F-1 students.
- Limits on changes in degree level.
- Limits on changes to program objectives (changing/adding majors).
- Sets 24-month lifetime limit on English language training.
