Discovering Australian indigenous culture

I have been at the University of Technology Sydney in Sydney, Australia for about a month now, and it has been absolutely amazing! The historical culture of Australia has been especially interesting to encounter. Relatively recently, in 2008, the Prime Minister of Australia issued a formal apology to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for the disrespect that occurred through the colonialization of the land. Since then, many practices have been made common to help remember those peoples’ cultures. For example, before every large presentation or class, an Acknowledgment of Country is made, a brief statement of respect towards the country and its original inhabitants. I also had the opportunity to participate in a Smoking Ceremony on my first day at the university, which is known as a historical gesture of goodwill and welcome. I am enrolled in a course called Aboriginal Sydney Now, where I will be able to learn more about the Indigenous cultures in Australia. I am very excited about this opportunity and think that the United States could learn an important lesson from Australia in embracing differences in culture. I can’t wait to continue learning about other cultures and how they influence life in Australia today!
