Study Abroad Events

Study abroad this summer on the French Culture and Internships program! Improve your French language skills or get real-world work experience in the gastronomic capital of France. Immerse yourself in the vibrant city of Lyon, a young city with old roots at the foot of the Alps. Tour restaurants, local food producers, museums, Roman ruins, and Renaissance and Medieval sites with other MU students. Choose between two tracks: 

  • Culture track: Take six credits from a large selection of courses, from beginng French to advanced cultural studies. 
  • Internship track: Enroll in FRENCH 4960 and 4993.

Attend an online workshop with Mizzou Study Abroad and the Fellowships Office to learn more about the nationally-competitive Gilman Scholarship for study abroad and how to maximize your chance of being selected. Each session will cover in-depth information on this scholarship and include a Gilman Writing Workshop, which deconstructs the essay prompts, walks you through how to frame your personal story for a Gilman audience, and provides with strategies to achieve clear, vivid writing. You will leave this session understanding how to effectively structure and execute the first draft of your application essay.

Study abroad this summer on the Global Mizzou Service: Elephant Conservation and Cultural Exploration in Northern Thailand program! Explore the historic temples, lush tropical jungles, ancient cities and delicious cuisine of Thailand while serving at Elephant Nature Park. Witness how elephants behave in their natural habitat and learn about the challenges facing elephant conservation. Prepare food, clean living quarters and help with construction projects at ENP.

Study abroad in Kyrgyzstan this summer on the Politics and Society in Central Asia program! Learn about the political, economic and societal challenges facing Kyrgyzstan as you travel with other MU students. Gain a better understanding of Kyrgyzstan’s experience with democratization and economic development. Explore beautiful and significant sites around the country, including Sulayman Mountain, Ala Archa National Park and the Uzgen Minaret and Mausoleum. Earn three credits of PEA_ST 4005, POL_SC 4004 or PUB_AF 8001.

Study abroad in Jamaica this summer on the Peacebuilding and Peacemaking in the Modern Caribbean program! Explore how the history of race, class, gender relations, colonialism and imperialism have shaped the prospects for peace in Caribbean communities. Visit Jamaica’s beautiful beaches as well as unique sites like the Bob Marley Museum and the offices of the prime minister and political ombudsman. Analyze the effects of religion, education, and popular music on Caribbean communities and peacebuilding. Fulfills A&S Diversity Intensive requirement.

Study abroad this summer on the World History on the German Stage program! Earn three credits (GERMAN 4005, HIST 2004 or PEA_ST 4001) as you spend two weeks study the culture and media landscape of contemporary Germany, exploring the legacies of the Cold War and the history of the imperial era and Nazi Germany. Extend your program for four weeks and earn three more credits (GERMAN 4001) as you improve your German language skills with expert instructors from the University of Leipzig.

Study abroad this summer on the Global Mizzou Service: Public Health and Education in Peru program! Explore the ancient stones of the Inca Empire and climb the 15th century wonder of Machu Picchu. Work with local children, teach English and provide wellness checkups for young children in marginal, urban areas. Serve at Belempampa Health Center, one of the largest health centers in Cusco. Build stoves out of locally-produced ceramic components and adobe mud for families who do not have clean burning stoves.

Study abroad this summer on the Global Mizzou Service: Education and Heritage of Ghana program! Walk along the beautiful beaches and explore the colorful Denu market in Kopeyia Village. Take lessons in West African drumming, dance, batik fabric making and cooking during your time in the village. Work with local Ghanaian teachers to create lesson plans and presentations to teach the students math, English, health and more.

Study abroad in Italy this summer on the Anthropology: Archaeology Field Methods in Pompeii program.  Spend four weeks outside of Naples, learning about archaeological field methods and Roman Archaeology at one of the most well-known sites in the world. Study Roman sanitation and water-supply alongside researchers from Mizzou and the United Kingdom. Examine the unique houses and shops of Pompeii while learning about survey and excavation techniques. Earn three credits of ANTHRO 2800/7800. Returning and advanced undergraduate students may be able to register for ANTHRO 4800.

Study abroad in Costa Rica this summer on the Comparative Criminal and Juvenile Justice program! Enroll in SOC WK 4101/7001 and explore criminal and juvenile justice approaches in correctional facilities, health agencies and communities. Understand Costa Rica’s criminal justice
system, including reintegration of offenders and nationwide restorative justice processes. Spend a weekend exploring Tortuguero National Park, a sanctuary for sea turtle nesting, as well as Poás Volcano and La Paz waterfall.

Study abroad this summer on the Culture, Public Health and Social Services: Exploring Greece program. Earn three credits (P_HLTH 8001, SOC_WK 7001, HLTH_SCI 4001 or SOC_WK 4101) and gain an understanding of Greece’s public health issues, health care services and social services, as well as possible implications for collaboration with the U.S. Explore exciting cities with a unique blend of ancient history and modern development.  Fulfills the international experience and elective requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Global Public Health.
