Reflecting on Costa Rica

I slowly read the words in my head, my face eliminated by the laptop screen.
It was late at night. I had just turned in my final assignment for PEA_ST 4005 — a reflection on my study abroad program to Costa Rica. The paper marked the end of an exciting learning experience, but one not soon to be forgotten. Social Justice, Human Rights and Narratives in Costa Rica provided a deep-dive into Costa Rica’s “alternative way.”
Social reform has been foundational to the development of modern Costa Rica. Through a variety of diverse lenses, we explored the Costa Rican healthcare system, environmental conservation efforts and commitment to human rights and international cooperation — including their demilitarization (Costa Rica is one of only three countries to undergo this process).
Along with some peace studies and public health students from the University of Missouri, I was able to volunteer at Hogar Infantil Curridabat (a children’s home), Refugio de Esperanza (a migrant shelter), Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center and ACJ-Ana Frank Daycare Center.
We also visited La Carpio (an impoverished, majority-immigrant community) / SIFAIS (a local development project), Chieton Moren Indigenous Organization (an artist cooperative), Maria Auxiliadora Organization and Free Clinic (with a women’s shelter and school), the InterAmerican Court for Human Rights and La Reforma (a low-security prison).
We listened to countless personal stories and witnessed solution-driven efforts to address universal issues. All of which left a definite impact — and which will stay with me long after this program has formally ended.
