Comparative Criminal and Juvenile Justice

I had the opportunity to study abroad in San Jose, Costa Rica with the university’s Department of Social Work. While there I was introduced to a new culture, language and legal system that greatly differed from the U.S. I visited the only rehabilitation center for women in the entire country, a foster home for infants and toddlers, La Carpio, Sifias and many other resourceful facilities throughout the country. My favorite part of the trip was learning about the LGBTQ+ laws in Costa Rica as a queer person and comparing them to here in the U.S. I found it interesting how laws are heavily influenced by religion in both the U.S. and Latin America.
