Ciao everyone, my name is Shon and I am currently studying abroad here at Florence University of Arts for six weeks. Thanks to being ahead in completing my major requirements at Mizzou, I had the freedom to explore unique courses that truly sparked my excitement. Ultimately, I chose to immerse myself in two paths that captured my passion: Bountelentis Architecture and Gelato and Food of Italy: Regional Cultures.

Exploring the beauty of Renaissance architecture, crafting authentic artisan gelato with professional chefs and experiencing the magic of a professional kitchen alongside culinary students has been an absolute blast! One of the reasons I chose to study in Italy specifically was the slower lifestyle compared to the West mixed with the incredible artistic culture. Over the last year, I began to experience a few different health issues including stress and burnout. So choosing a place that allowed me to slow down a bit was crucial to regain my creativity as well as to get inspired. In Italy, people genuinely prioritize savoring every moment, taking time to enjoy meals, strolling leisurely through the streets and connecting with one another without the distractions of technology.

In Florence, mealtime is not merely a necessity but a sacred ritual. Italians take great pleasure in their cuisine, and meals are an occasion for family and friends to come together. From long lunches to unhurried dinners, each dish is meticulously prepared with care and enjoyed with gusto. The emphasis on quality over quantity and the joy of sharing meals creates a unique sense of community and appreciation for food.

In a city embellished with architectural wonders and picturesque streets, walking in Florence becomes an experience in itself. The Florentines have perfected the art of strolling. They walk with purpose, taking their time to appreciate the beauty surrounding them. Instead of rushing from one place to another, they savor every step, pausing to admire the intricate details of the buildings, the charming storefronts and the vibrant street life. Walking in Florence is not just a means of transportation but a way to engage with the city and its people. Life in Florence is not about rushing from one task to another; it is about living with intention. Whether it’s honing traditional artisanal skills, or preserving ancient cultural traditions, the Florentines value purposeful living. The pursuit of quality and attention to detail are translated into every aspect of life, from the meticulously crafted artwork to the care put into maintaining historical landmarks.

My time in Florence has been nothing short of amazing. Engrossed in the Italian way of life, I have come to appreciate the art of slowing down and embracing the present moment. From savoring delicious meals with new friends to taking leisurely walks through the captivating streets, Florence has taught me the value of purposeful living. I hope to take with me the lessons learned here and apply them to our busy lives in the United States and learn to enjoy simple pleasures. Grazie, Florence, for showing me the true art of living slowly.
