Experiencing Spanish flavors

I’ve never been one to try new foods or branch out of my comfort zone. However, I knew if I wanted to make the most out of my time in Barcelona, I’d have to change that. Typically the foods I do enjoy and revert back to are spicy and salty. But, since being here, I’ve found that those flavors are hard to find. Of course my first meal in Barcelona was tapas. I settled on Patatas Bravas, Croquetas, Tortilla Española and Pimientos de Padrón. My favorite so far has been the Pimientos de Padrón because it offers both spicy and salty. Another unexpected favorite has been the fried Calamari. This dish has been a staple for me anytime I order tapas. While I enjoy the idea behind tapas, it can get expensive. For those unsure of what tapas are, they’re essentially small servings of food meant to be shared.

As expected, the serving sizes in Europe are much smaller than those in the United States. In order to be full, my friends and I have to order multiple rounds of tapas. Although the price of tapas quickly adds up, the time spent with friends is worth it. Here in Spain it is common to spend hours at a restaurant conversing and catching up with friends and family. This custom is something I’ve come to enjoy. Our meals aren’t rushed and we get to spend much needed time with our friends. Trying tapas when in Spain is a must! I’d highly recommend the ones mentioned before as well as churros con chocolate as dessert!
