The end of my exchange year

As I approach the end of my time at the University of Manchester, I want to reflect on how beneficial studying abroad has been for me. I’ve traveled to so many amazing places and made wonderful friends who’ve welcomed me into their homes and shown me the beauty of their towns, villages and cities. I’ve stayed with friends in York, London, Somerset and Cambridge, and even got to experience the stunning landscapes of Cornwall, with its beautiful beaches, cliffs, and mountains dotted with sheep and wild horses. Thanks to the ease of transportation around England, I’ve also taken the train to Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, and traveled all the way to Mallaig at the tip of Scotland on the West Highland Line, which is rated one of the most scenic train journeys in the world!

Because of England’s proximity to other countries, I will be staying after my program ends to travel around Europe for a month. I plan on visiting Spain, Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Traveling has given me a much broader perspective on different ways of life, and I’ve learned so much about British culture that I can confidently say I know what it’s like to be a university student in England.

Spending a year abroad has truly changed me for the better. I’ve grown so much more confident and resilient. I can go places and even travel alone now. Meeting new people doesn’t faze me anymore, and I’ve honed my writing and planning skills thanks to the challenging workload at an English university. This year has taught me more about myself than I ever thought possible.

As I gear up to explore more of Europe, I can’t help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Living in England for a year has broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for different cultures. Studying abroad has been an unforgettable journey, and I will recommend it to anyone who will listen.
