Shopping in Spain

Back at home, shopping in general looks so different—whether it is groceries, clothes or access to everything at once. In the U.S., you can go to Target or a superstore and get groceries, clothing, electronics and everything in one spot. Things are very different here.
For groceries, people here typically go to mercados or small stores that only sell specific foods. Everything seems so much fresher for so much cheaper. Another major difference is how often they go grocery shopping. My host family seems to go every other day to get a variety of items in order for everything to stay fresh. In the States, I tend to try to go grocery shopping as little as possible, but then it makes it difficult to get fresh food and keep it good. I usually go to one store and find everything I need.
If you are looking for something that has everything in one spot, a flea market is usually the best option here. They are one of my favorite parts about being abroad because they are everywhere. Everything is second-hand and at a reduced rate. Vendors set up a little spot on the street and you can find anything you want. In these pictures, you can see some examples: fruit, art, flowers, clothes, postcards, souvenirs, jewelry and so much more. It is another level of thrifting compared to what I am used to at home.
The next thing about shopping relates to fashion here. Everyone tends to dress a lot classier here with a lot of layers, even if it isn’t cold. It is not normal to wear a hoodie and sweatpants to class like it is at home, which was a big adjustment for me. The stores here definitely reflect the style as well. Things seem to be cheaper but better quality, especially at the flea markets or other second-hand shops.
Overall, the shopping—whether it was grocery, clothing or whatever it may be—was an adjustment I really enjoyed. The habit of grocery shopping more often, buying fresher food, second-hand clothing and other items is a habit I am going to bring back with me to the United States!
