As my time in Costa Rica comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on all the unforgettable moments that have made this study abroad experience truly special. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture, study alongside incredible peers and explore this beautiful country. From the warm hospitality of my Mama Tica to the interactive Spanish classes, each day has been an adventure. Here is a glimpse into the highlights of my time here and what I’ll miss the most.

One of the things that has made my stay in Costa Rica so memorable is the incredible food. From the moment I arrived, my Mama Tica welcomed me with open arms and a plate of traditional Costa Rican dishes that immediately made me feel at home. Her gallo pinto (rice and beans), daily fresh fruit and homemade juices, and her unique pie creations became my comfort food throughout my stay. Every meal was a reflection of her warmth and care and I looked forward to every bite. There is something so special about the way she prepares each dish with love and it is no surprise that every meal felt like a small celebration of the culture. Not only was the cooking amazing, but her stories about her travels and adventures always put a smile on my face. I can already tell that I’ll miss her cooking and her company when I leave.

The rewarding part of traveling abroad with the Sinclair School of Nursing is the opportunity to work in the communities of Costa Rica. My roommates and I got to spend time at an Elderly Daycare Center. I have never felt so much joy in one room! The participants were so friendly and welcoming to us and were very patient with the little spanish skills I have. We were able to take their blood pressures and blood glucose levels as well as teach about ideal levels to maintain. Part of the curriculum for the study abroad program was to create a project that addresses a community need. My group saw the need for more education on blood pressure/blood sugar so we created a pamphlet with simple explanations. The participants were so excited to take our pamphlets home to show their families. While in Costa Rica, I also got to tour many medical facilities. We were taught about the differences between public and private hospitals and the EBIAS programs. Since Costa Rica has free healthcare (social security), the EBIAS program works to visit every household in the country annually. The Costa Rican healthcare system really made me think about how we as nurses in America should educate and prioritize primary/preventive care rather than fixing an issue once it has already occurred.

Visiting an EBAIS

One of the most unexpected but rewarding parts of this experience has been the people I’ve met along the way. The friendships I’ve made with fellow students in the nursing program have been invaluable. We have shared countless laughs and cultural experiences together. Traveling to Punta Leona, zip lining, and experiencing waterfall and volcano hikes were some of my favorite memories. These bonds have made my time in Costa Rica all the more meaningful. Additionally, I’ve met so many wonderful locals who have shared their culture with me. My roommates and I visited a local restaurant called Campus multiple times and loved chatting with the owner. He gave us many recommendations and made our nights spent at campus some of the best. The kindness and openness from locals have made me feel so welcome, and it’s this sense of community that has truly made Costa Rica feel like a second home.

When I first arrived, my Spanish was basic at best, but thanks to the skilled teachers at the Costa Rican Language Academy, my skills have improved drastically. The Spanish classes were an integral part of my experience, allowing me to connect more deeply with locals and understand the culture in a more meaningful way. My instructor, Vanessa, was not only passionate about teaching the language but also encouraging us while we learned. While I still need a lot of improvement in my Spanish skills, this program has relit a fire in me to spend time practicing my skills. I would love to continue with studying and taking classes while back in the states!

No time in Costa Rica would be complete without a visit to its stunning beaches. One of the most memorable excursions during my time here was a weekend trip to Punta Leona. Punta Leona is a beautiful beach town along the Pacific coast. The excursion started with a walk across the crocodile bridge and shopping at some tourist spots. The first night we arrived, I got to see the crystal-clear ocean and one of the most gorgeous sunsets I have ever experienced. We spent the evening swimming in the ocean followed by a fun dinner with all the students on the program! The highlight of Punta Leona was definitely seeing monkeys swinging from the trees as we walked to breakfast each morning.

Sunset at Punta Leona

As I prepare to leave Costa Rica, it is hard to put into words just how much I will miss this place. The vibrant culture, the stunning sunsets, the delicious food and the people all make saying goodbye so hard. Costa Rica has given me so many memories, friendship and experiences that have shaped my view on the world beyond the states. I’ve learned more about myself, my career and the world around me than I ever thought possible. While I am excited to see my family and  share all my stories, part of me will always carry a piece of Costa Rica with me. I can honestly say that this study abroad program was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I hope to continue traveling in the future and one day return to Costa Rica!
