Shopping at Mercadona: Studying abroad in Madrid

One of the best ways to travel is through food. Studying abroad in Spain has broadened my horizons and has allowed me to try new foods that are typical in Spain. The list is endless: Jamón, tortilla de patata, bocadillos, gazpacho, calamar, paella and the list goes on. However, living in the same place for an extended period of time means that going out to eat every day can get pricey. That’s why one of my favorite places in Spain has become Mercadona. This interest of mine is shared among many Spanish natives — it is the Disney World of grocery stores. Everything is beyond reasonably priced, and the food is delicious. Some of my favorites have become grab and go bocadillos, the jamón ibérico and the microwavable tortilla de patata (con cebolla, of course).
Shopping at Mercadona has not only saved me money, but has also given me a glimpse into everyday life in Spain. Whether I’m grabbing ingredients to cook a simple meal at home or exploring new snacks I’ve never seen before, grocery shopping has become a part of the cultural experience. It’s also a fun way to learn new vocabulary through labels and product names have helped me learn food related Spanish in a more natural way. Living abroad isn’t just about sightseeing or visiting famous landmarks, for me it’s also about embracing the ordinary. Mercadona has become an unexpected but essential part of my Spanish adventure.
