Black Forest hiking

One of the major things to do while in Germany, especially in the Black Forest, is to go hiking. Freiburg is a little different from how other cities are, when developing new areas nature is taken into consideration.

Which is evident when looking at a map of Freiburg from above. Anywhere in the city is less than a combined 30 minute tram ride and walk from the woods/mountains. I have had a lot of fun just going hiking after class and getting the opportunity to see local vegetation, which I really appreciate as a Plant Sciences student.

It’s a great way to get outdoors and some “light” exercise. I put light in parentheses because at least here in the Black Forest even it it is a paved path (most will be gravel or dirt) it will still have one of the steepest inclines you may have ever seen and is not quite a casual walk up to the lookout point — though the views are definitely worth it.

Seeing the town from far above, flowers along the way and maybe even some castle ruins — there’s always something new to see!
