Our first full day in Taormina! We explored the city, browsing the street vendors before walking through history at the ancient Greek theater, a Roman amphitheater where gladiators not only fought but also lived.
Spent the day hiking Mount Etna! We learned from an archaeologist about the unique Etna birch tree, which has this amazing history in Sicily but is sadly at risk of going extinct soon because of global warming. It was definitely a bittersweet moment, but it was also fascinating to learn how insanely fertile the volcanic land is, making the surrounding area perfect for agriculture.
Had my very first authentic cannolo in Catania! Knowing that they actually originate here in Sicily made it taste that much sweeter. I ate it while walking around a gorgeous piazza packed with locals and tourists, which gave it such a warm, welcoming vibe. It was insanely delicious and is definitely one of my absolute best memories from studying abroad.
Full day in Siracusa, plus a quick trip nearby to see some stunning architecture. We began our day with a pastry workshop at Bonajuto chocolate shop and tasting of famous Modica chocolate. After that, we headed over to see the spectacular Duomo di San Giorgio. It sits right at the top of this massive, sweeping staircase and totally breathtaking.
