My study abroad experience in Costa Rica

I chose to travel to Costa Rica for my study abroad experience. This may sound cliché, but this was truly a life-changing experience. Before traveling to Costa Rica, I was very excited but also a little nervous. This was my first time traveling internationally, much less by myself. Coming into Costa Rica, I wanted to learn more about the culture and their Pura Vida lifestyle, understand global perspectives and step out of my comfort zone. I was also thrilled to learn about their criminal justice system.
One of the first things that stuck out to me about San Jose, Costa Rica, was how vibrant and lively it was. The city is full of color and busy streets. I was truly immersed in a new culture I hadn’t experienced before. Trying different Costa Rican dishes was a highlight of my travel. I enjoyed learning about their different food customs and trying new dishes.
Throughout the program, there were sometimes language barriers, and communication was challenging; those experiences helped me become more adaptable. One of the most interesting parts was learning about their legal system. Through different presentations and discussions, I gained a better understanding of how the courts and correctional institutions operate. I was especially interested in comparing Costa Rica’s approach to criminal justice with that of the United States.
Overall, my travel experience in Costa Rica was unforgettable. I came back home with meaningful memories, new knowledge and a greater appreciation for the Costa Rican culture. I would highly recommend studying abroad to anyone looking to expand their perspective, challenge themselves or just make memories that will last forever.
