True football experience with my new study abroad friends

On May 30, I got to experience one of the most fun things! I had always heard about the “true” football (aka soccer) experience. In America, soccer is increasing in popularity, but in England — it is everything. When I knew that I would be studying abroad in London, I knew I wanted to find a team to support, and I hoped that a team would naturally become my favorite. That is exactly what happened!

Arsenal Football Club won the Premier League for the first time in 22 years. Especially since I live in North London, this was a huge deal. People were all dressed in Arsenal gear and were overjoyed with their successful season. I feel so lucky that I got to live in North London during such a fun time, especially since I got to watch them compete against PSG in the Champions League game. I went with my new study abroad friends/roommates to Finsbury Park, where all the pubs were PACKED. We ended up having to stand outside amongst a large crowd and watch the game through the window of a pub. People were cheering, chanting, laughing, yelling and everything in between. When Arsenal scored, everyone went crazy and were jumping around. It was so much fun getting to experience this for the first time. The game was great as well; it went all the way to penalty kicks.

Unfortunately, Arsenal lost and many people were upset. However, I had the time of my life, and it was incredible to see so many people come together to cheer on their team. I also feel incredibly grateful to have been able to share such a fun experience with my new friends. This is something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life, and I am proud to now say that I am an Arsenal fan!
