Traveling in Prague

Prague is typically a cool and rainy city, but the day we arrived the sun welcomed us with open arms. It was warm with the most perfect clouds. I’m a nervous flier, but landing in such a beautiful place immediately put my anxiety at ease. Prague was absolutely beautiful. I had seen pictures in books and online, but nothing compared to the vision we saw in Old Town and the surrounding areas. Most of the CZU campus we stayed at looked almost as if it were just another town over from Columbia itself, but the closer you got to the heart of Prague, it was like a whole new world.

The buildings were ornate and full of history. Everywhere you walked there were a plethora of people and a million things to do. Aside from the beautiful architecture, one of my favorite things about Prague was the ease of getting around. Public transport there runs about every four minutes on the weekdays and every 10 on the weekends. The buses were always right on the dot, and you could get anywhere you wanted to go easily. From buses to trams to the metro to even ferries, you could live your whole life in Prague and never need a car. On one occasion, we got off the metro, went up the escalator, and landed right inside of a huge mall. Google maps and Apple maps worked extremely well too. I was worried about knowing what stop to get off at and how the language barrier might make getting around difficult, but it truly wasn’t hard at all. You get used to the stop names you go to all the time, and the ones you aren’t familiar with, you can still easily recognize when using your phone map.

My top three pieces of advice to anyone traveling in Prague would be:

  1. Always keep your bus pass on you.
  2. Know that if you get off at the wrong stop, it’s not hard to go back and get on the right path again.
  3. Always keep your bus pass on you!
