COVID-19: Guidance for MU departments planning to host international scholars

March 11, 2020

In light of the current travel warnings associated with COVID-19, International Student and Scholar Services directs all MU departments to postpone the program start dates for international scholars (visitors or employees) who currently reside in or are traveling through CDC warning level 3 countries. This applies to international scholars with expected program start dates between now and June 1, 2020. Please contact an international scholar adviser for consultation regarding changes to SEVIS records and updating scholar documentation to accommodate the delayed start date. Host departments may also choose to postpone the program start date for scholars arriving from any country, regardless of CDC advisory level.

In the event that an international scholar arrives in Missouri originating from or traveling through a CDC warning level 3 country, the host department must contact Lauren Sellers, international scholar coordinator, immediately for further instruction. For after-hours assistance, contact the MU Police Department at 573-882-7201 and they will connect you to International Student and Scholar Services. With guidance from our office, host departments are responsible for coordinating support to their international scholars during arrival and while undergoing the 14-day self-isolation period, including airport transportation, continuity of housing, meals and communications, including access to the internet.

International scholars who feel sick and think they have been exposed to COVID-19 or may have been in contact with someone who is infect with the virus should call ahead before visiting the MU Student Health Center or University Hospital.

International Student and Scholar Services will continue to provide guidance to host departments in support of their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of international scholars, as well as the MU and local community.
