Mizzou Abroad Orientation for students

The online Mizzou Abroad Orientation is required for all students participating in study abroad or university-related international travel programs. You are encouraged to invite your family to review the orientation as well.

Program leader workshops

The Office of International Health, Safety and Security collaborates with the UM System Office of the General Counsel, UM System Office of Risk and Insurance Management and MU Counseling Center to design and present health, safety and security training for MU faculty and staff planning to lead groups of students abroad, as well as international educators across campus. The office also develops and maintains the Field Guide for Program Leaders, which contains emergency procedures tailored to the specific needs of MU faculty and staff who will be serving as first responders for student incidents abroad.

Health, Safety and Security Workshop for Program Leaders
This workshop assists program leaders and assistants in understanding their roles and responsibilities, along with the resources and support available through the Office of International Health, Safety and Security and the university as a whole. Program leaders are provided with guidelines for addressing health, safety and security issues impacting program participants and student behavioral issues occurring on study abroad and university-related international travel programs. Presenters include representatives from the UM System Office of the General Counsel, UM System Office of Risk and Insurance Management and MU Office of International Health, Safety and Security. The workshop covers:

  • Best practices to support student health, safety and security
  • Individual and institutional liability concerns
  • Risk management and insurance coverage
  • Student conduct issues
  • Emergency response

This workshop is required for all faculty, staff and program assistants who have leadership roles for MU study abroad or university-related international travel programs. They are required to attend this workshop every other year to receive updated information.

Case Studies for International Educators Workshop
This workshop is open to program leaders and assistants who have led an international program in the last five years and all education abroad professionals.

Participants examine and discuss case studies based on a variety of incidents that can impact MU students abroad and gain practical experience applying best practices for supporting student health, safety and security abroad.

Case studies are moderated by the Office of International Health, Safety and Security and representatives from the UM System Office of the General Counsel and UM System Office of Risk and Insurance Management will be in attendance to help answer questions. Attendees are expected to actively participate in case study discussions.

Take Action for Mental Health for International Educators
This workshop is open to all MU faculty and staff who work with students participating in study abroad or university-related international programs.

Developed by the MU Counseling Center, this workshop provides practical guidance regarding how to start a conversation with a student who may be experiencing a mental health problem. Guidance on balancing compassion and behavioral accountability will be provided. Participants will gain practical experience by actively participating in case study discussions.
