At this time, the University of Missouri requires all university-related travel to be reviewed and approved. All MU students hoping to participant in study abroad or university-related international travel, including students who have received approval from their academic departments, are required to submit appeals to the Student Travel Abroad Review Committee.
The International Travel Registry provides access to university support and resources for university-related international travel. According to the University of Missouri Collected Rules and Regulations, MU students participating on university-related travel abroad are REQUIRED to register with International Programs prior to departure. Additionally, MU faculty/staff traveling abroad with MU students, and all participants accompanying university-related international activities or study abroad programs who are not enrolled as students are also required to register. Registration should be completed at least one month prior to departure.
Registry benefits include:
- UM System-negotiated international sickness and accident insurance;
- Security intelligence and access to AlertTraveler, the university’s security software;
- Security, political, natural disaster and medical evacuation services;
- In event of emergency, campus and university medical, legal and financial support services available to students on the MU campus.
Individuals who do not register may not have access to these benefits.
If you are unsure whether you are required to register or have other questions about the travel registry, please contact the Office of International Health, Safety and Security by email (firstname.lastname@example.org).
MU Student International Travel Policy
The MU Student International Travel Policy requires students planning to participate in study abroad programs and university-related international activities in countries or regions with a U.S. Department of State travel advisory level three (reconsider travel) or level four (do not travel) or a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention travel warning (level three) to request approval from the university’s Student Travel Abroad Review Committee. Travel registration requiring approval should be completed at least eight weeks prior to the proposed travel time to allow time for review.
MU students participating on university-related travel abroad are required to register in the International Travel Registry (login with your MU username). This applies to university graduate and undergraduate students traveling individually or in groups, with or without university funding, for any university-organized, university-administered or university-related activity or program, including:
- Conducting research abroad;
- Attending conferences abroad;
- Participating in practicums, clinicals abroad;
- Participating in non-credit service-learning or volunteer activities abroad;
- University-contracted international travel.
If you are participating on a study abroad program, you do not need to register. International Programs has this information from your study abroad application. You are required to report any travel away from your program location as a side-trip in your study abroad application.
Group student travel
Groups of five or more students traveling abroad together on a non-credit, university-sponsored international activity should register as a group in the International Travel Registry.
The group leader should contact Office of International Health, Safety and Security by email (email@example.com) to start the process. The group leader will be asked to submit information about the program and participants using the following two forms:
The Office of International Health, Safety and Security will enroll the participants in the International Travel Registry and follow up to ensure that required materials are completed and submitted prior to departure.
Faculty/staff traveling with students
Faculty and staff leading MU study abroad programs or university-related international activities or traveling abroad on university-related business with MU students are asked to register in the International Travel Registry. Registering provides access to the AlertTraveler security software, as well as access to key information about the UnitedHealthcare Global insurance for faculty and staff.
Faculty and staff members traveling abroad on university-related business without students or other participants are not required to register in the International Travel registry. However, they may register their travel following the process outlined on the UM System Risk and Insurance Management website, which provides information about university-contracted international insurance and other resources.
Non-enrolled participant travel
Participants accompanying study abroad programs or university-related international activities who are not enrolled as students or serving as program leaders are required to register in the International Travel Registry. For additional information, see the policy for non-enrolled participants in MU study abroad programs and university-related international activities.
