Work authorization

Students and scholars who file for an extension of stay (EOS) in a timely manner will receive an automatic extension (not to exceed 240 days) of their work authorization while their EOS is pending.

USCIS has not outlined the official EOS process. We anticipate additional information in the future.

OPT and STEM OPT

You will not need to file an extension of stay if you do both of the following:

  • You do not travel/re-enter the U.S. on or after Sept. 15, 2026, and
  • You file for OPT or STEM OPT before March 18, 2027.

You will need to file an extension of stay if you do either of the following:

  • You travel/re-enter the U.S. on or after Sept. 15, 2026, or
  • You file for OPT or STEM OPT on or after March 18, 2027.
