MU International Student and Scholar Services staff member selected for flagship fellowship program

Feb. 13, 2020

MU International Student and Scholar Services is pleased to announce that NAFSA: Association of International Educators has selected SEVIS compliance coordinator Chris Huh to participate in the 2020 NAFSA RISE Fellowship.

NAFSA’s fellowship is a two-year program given to international education practitioners and professionals across the United States. As a flagship diversity, equity and inclusion program, the fellowship is designed to fund professional development opportunities for international educators of underrepresented minority backgrounds.

“I’ll have the chance to be networking with people from different backgrounds who are also in the field of international education,” Huh said. “It’s underrepresented minorities based on gender, race, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, so I think it’s going to be really exciting to see what perspectives different kinds of people have within this field.”

Through the fellowship, Huh will have the opportunity to participate in the NAFSA Academy for International Education, where she will be mentored through an individualized learning plan for the first year. She will also attend the NAFSA 2020 Region IV Conference and the NAFSA annual conference and expo. Fellows are encouraged to apply their learning the following year to impact their respective campus or community.

“I hope to gain a better understanding of international education and how I as an individual can contribute more to the field,” Huh said. “I want to learn how I can better advocate for international students and scholars, study abroad, or other areas within this field, and how I can work better within the frameworks of international education.”

The program’s goals are to provide representation of international education professionals from underrepresented minority backgrounds; ensure the inclusion of participants into established, professionally-recognized NAFSA programming and networks; support the continued learning and sustained engagement of participants as they establish themselves in their professional journey; and lead the empowerment of participants with resources and tools to help them give back to their institutions and communities, and the field at large.
