Final rule ending duration of status
July 17, 2026
On July 17, a new rule ending duration of status for F, J and I nonimmigrants was published in the Federal Register. This rule is expected to impact the ability to change major or degree level, transfer or request additional time in the U.S. on F-1 and J-1 status. It will go into effect Sept. 15, 2026.
International Student and Scholar Services is reviewing the new rule and related resources to fully understand its impact on Mizzou’s international community. Additional information will be shared with affected students, scholars and campus stakeholders as it becomes available, and updates will be posted on this page.
If you have questions or concerns about the new rule, advising for international students and scholars is available through in-person walk-ins or online appointments. You can also contact an ISSS adviser by email.
To change majors or degree levels, transfer to another school, or extend an I-20 or DS-2019, refer to the current information on the ISSS website. During the implementation period, the instructions and eligibility requirements for these processes are subject to change at the discretion of federal agencies.
