On July 17, a new rule regarding duration of status for F, J and I nonimmigrants was published in the Federal Register. This rule will impact the ability to change major or degree level, transfer or request additional time in the U.S. on F-1 and J-1 status. It will go into effect Sept. 15, 2026.

We encourage you to review our new duration of status website so you are prepared for changes that will impact you as you continue your studies at Mizzou.

International Student and Scholar Services advises the following for continuing students:  

• If you are currently traveling outside the United States, return prior to Sept. 15, 2026, when the rule goes into effect.  
• If you have academic needs for a program extension, submit your request in myStatus no later than Aug. 25.
• If you need to make any program edits, including adding a major, adding a second degree, adding a certificate, changing your major or changing your degree level, notify your international student adviser and begin working with your academic department as soon as possible. All I-20/DS-2019 program edits will need to be made prior to Sept. 15.
• If you have a pending OPT application with USCIS, it is recommended that you do not travel while your OPT is pending. If travel is necessary while your application is pending, contact ISSS to be advised of your next steps.
