Summer travel reminders for international students and scholars

Students and scholars who are planning to travel this summer should review the travel information relevant to their status.
Travel signatures
If you need your I-20 or DS-2019 signed for travel:
- F-1/J-1 students — Come to a travel signature session at the International Center (N52 Memorial Union). Bring a hard copy of your document.
- J-1 scholars — Obtain a travel signature during scholar walk-in advising hours.
Travel restrictions for individuals from certain countries
Individuals from the countries listed below are advised not to travel outside the U.S. at this time. If travel is necessary, students and scholars will need a valid visa that was issued prior to the effective date listed for their country below.
Proclamations 10949 and 10988 restrict entry for students and scholars on F-1, J-1 and H-1B visas, along with any associated dependents, from the following countries.
Restrictions effective Jan. 1, 2026:
- Burkina Faso
- Laos
- Mali
- Niger
- Sierra Leone
- South Sudan
- Syria
Restrictions effective June 9, 2025:
- Afghanistan
- Burma
- Chad
- Republic of Congo
- Equatorial Guinea
- Eritrea
- Haiti
- Iran
- Libya
- Somalia
- Sudan
- Yemen
Proclamation 10988, effective Jan. 1, 2026, also includes full restrictions and entry limitations for individuals holding travel documents issued by the Palestinian Authority.
Proclamations 10949 and 10988 restrict entry as immigrants, and nonimmigrants on B-1, B-2, B-1/B-2, F, M, J visas, along with any associated dependents, from the following countries.
Restrictions effective Jan. 1, 2026:
- Angola
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Benin
- Cote d’Ivoire
- Dominica
- Gabon
- Gambia
- Malawi
- Mauritania
- Nigeria
- Senegal
- Tanzania
- Tonga
- Zambia
- Zimbabwe
Restrictions effective June 9, 2025:
- Burundi
- Cuba
- Togo
- Venezuela
Proclamation 10988 lifted the previous ban on Turkmenistan for nonimmigrant visa holders.
